There is something really special about photographing celebrations that feel intimate and deeply personal, and Sarah’s baby shower in the West Village was exactly that kind of event. Sarah and her husband Nate were expecting their first baby, a little boy, and celebrated with a beautiful shower surrounded by close friends and family at Bobo in the West Village.

The shower took place in Bobo’s private outdoor garden space, which felt cozy, warm, and perfect for a smaller gathering. Even though the area itself was a little tight for photography, the atmosphere made up for it completely. Everyone was relaxed, excited, and genuinely so happy to celebrate Sarah entering this new season of life.

One of my favorite things about photographing events like baby showers is documenting all the smaller in-between moments that happen naturally throughout the day. The hugs when guests first arrive, people catching up over drinks, laughter during conversations, and emotional reactions during speeches often become some of the most meaningful memories later on.

As guests arrived, I spent time capturing Sarah greeting everyone and moving throughout the space talking with her friends and relatives. You could feel how loved and supported she was by everyone there.

Before the shower officially began, we also spent a little time walking around the West Village taking portraits of Sarah. I always love incorporating the neighborhood into sessions whenever possible because it adds another layer of personality and atmosphere to the gallery.

The West Village honestly works beautifully for portraits because every street feels charming and cinematic without trying too hard. Between the brownstones, tree-lined sidewalks, and quiet corners, the entire neighborhood has such a timeless New York feel.

Back at the shower, the afternoon unfolded naturally with lots of conversation, laughter, and little moments between guests. Sarah’s mom gave a heartfelt speech that had everyone emotional for a few minutes before the energy shifted back into excitement and celebration.

There was also a small shower game that brought a lot of laughter into the space and gave everyone a chance to interact together. I always try to photograph events in a way that feels observational rather than intrusive, allowing people to stay present in the experience while I document everything unfolding naturally around them. Toward the end of the shower, we gathered everyone together for group photos before guests slowly began heading out for the afternoon.

One thing I really love about baby showers is how much emotion exists underneath even the quieter moments. There is excitement for the future, nostalgia for the season of life that is ending, and so much anticipation for everything about to change. Photographing these gatherings always feels like documenting a turning point in someone’s story.

Sarah and Nate’s shower felt elegant, warm, and incredibly full of love from beginning to end. You could tell how excited everyone was to welcome this little boy into such a supportive community of friends and family.

Looking for an event photographer?

As an NYC event photographer, these are the kinds of celebrations I love documenting most. The moments may seem small while they are happening, but years later they become part of a family’s history. If you are planning a baby shower, bridal shower, or intimate event in NYC and want photography that feels natural, emotional, and true to the atmosphere of the day, I would love to document it for you.
