The Inquiry That Made Me Cry

Every once in a while, an inquiry lands in your inbox that completely catches you off guard. Last fall, I received one of those messages.

It was from Annie, one of my former students from the very first class I ever taught as a teacher. She had seen through TikTok that I had left teaching and become a full-time photographer and had been quietly following my work ever since. When she reached out, she told me she wanted a portrait session as her sixteenth birthday gift from her mom.

She wasn't sure if I would remember her, but of course I remembered her! Annie had been one of the sweetest, smartest kids in my classroom, and reading her message immediately brought back so many memories. The fact that she trusted me to document such an important milestone years later genuinely meant a lot to me.

A Christmas-Themed Portrait Session in NYC

Because Annie's birthday is in early December and she absolutely loves Christmas, she wanted her portraits to feel festive and distinctly New York. To make that happen, we started before sunrise at the Lotte New York Palace.

One of the biggest advantages of scheduling early morning sessions in Midtown during the holiday season is that you can experience all the beauty of the city before the crowds arrive. The city felt almost quiet when we started.

From the Palace, we wandered through Midtown and eventually made our way toward Rockefeller Center while stopping for portraits along the way. The holiday decorations, sparkling lights, and seasonal atmosphere created the perfect backdrop for the session while still keeping the focus on Annie herself.

She looked absolutely beautiful and brought such a natural confidence to the session!

A Full Circle Moment

What made this session especially meaningful for me was getting the chance to catch up with Annie. When she was in my classroom, she was only nine years old. Now she was sixteen.

Throughout the morning, we talked about school, future plans, life, and everything that had happened since our teacher-student days. It was one of those rare moments where two completely different chapters of my life unexpectedly intersected. As photographers, we often talk about preserving memories for our clients, but this session ended up becoming a meaningful memory for me too.

By the end of the shoot, Annie told me how much she loved the photos, but even more importantly, she shared how comfortable and confident she felt throughout the experience. That meant the world to me.

Portrait sessions are never just about creating beautiful images. They are about helping people feel seen and celebrating who they are in this moment of their lives. Getting to do that for a former student made this session one I will never forget.
