Andrew & Rachel's Proposal at the Peter Pan Monument in Carl Schurz Park


Andrew and Rachel got engaged on a September evening at sunset, at the Peter Pan Monument in Carl Schurz Park, a few blocks from the apartment they already shared on the Upper East Side. The light was doing that late-summer thing where everything along the water turns gold for about twenty minutes, and Andrew had timed the whole evening around it without Rachel ever suspecting a thing.


How They Met

Andrew and Rachel met on Hinge three years ago, both already living within a few blocks of each other on the UES without knowing it. About a year ago, they made it official in a different way, moving in together into a new apartment in that same neighborhood they'd both called home before they ever met.


The Proposal

Andrew's cover story barely needed to be one. He suggested a walk along the water before dinner, the kind of low-key plan two people who live around the corner from a park make without thinking twice. They walked straight to the Peter Pan Monument, greenery on either side and the last of the evening light coming through the trees. Andrew started talking, and Rachel knew almost immediately, tearing up before he'd even gotten down on one knee.


A couple of friends happened to be sitting nearby when we arrived to set up. I asked if they'd mind stepping out of view for a few minutes, and they moved to a nearby set of steps, watching from a distance while also keeping other passersby from wandering down and interrupting the moment. After Andrew placed the ring on her finger, the two of them stood there for a moment just taking it in before we moved into photos, first around the monument, then along the water, then back toward their building as the light faded.

Planning a Proposal at the Peter Pan Monument


The Peter Pan Monument sits in a quieter corner of Carl Schurz Park, framed by flowers and greenery, with the water and a few small bridges just a short walk beyond it. It's a strong option for couples who want a real park backdrop without the crowds that come with a more heavily trafficked spot like Central Park. Because it's a residential neighborhood park rather than a major tourist destination, evenings here tend to stay calm even on a nice night.
