Most couples planning a proposal in New York default to Manhattan, Central Park especially. Staten Island rarely comes up, which is part of what makes Snug Harbor Cultural Center such a good option. The Tuscan Garden, tucked into its 83 acres, is quiet, detailed, and easy to overlook if you don't already know it's there. Gerard did, and it's exactly why he chose it for Taryn.

How they got here

Gerard and Taryn knew each other in high school, but their relationship actually started six years ago, while both were back home on Staten Island during COVID. Public outdoor spaces were some of the only places anyone could meet up then, so a lot of their early dates happened in parks and gardens. Snug Harbor was one of the spots they kept returning to. Six years later, it made sense that Gerard would bring her back there to ask her to marry him.

The proposal

It was the middle of a bright, hot summer day. Gerard had been nervous leading up to it, the kind of nervous that only breaks once it's actually done. He knelt in front of the fountain in the Tuscan Garden, and Taryn started crying right away. She'd had a small suspicion something might happen that day, but wasn't sure, and she'd dressed for it either way in a white dress and heels.

There was a small, funny detail that made the day feel even more fitting. Right before Gerard proposed, another couple got engaged in the same spot. Gerard and Taryn missed it, but I was there and saw it happen. For a garden most people don't think to visit, it's clearly doing something right!

After the proposal, we wandered through the rest of the gardens for photos, and Taryn spent most of it asking Gerard how long he'd been planning it and how he'd managed to keep it a secret. He filled her in as they walked, hand in hand, stopping every so often for another photo. Later that evening, they were meeting up with both families to celebrate.

Six years earlier, the Snug Harbor Garden was one of the only places Gerard and Taryn could actually spend time together (thanks, COVID). It's fitting that it's also where he chose to ask her to marry him. Some places hold on to what you give them, and Snug Harbor clearly held on to this one.

Planning a proposal at Snug Harbor's Tuscan Garden

Snug Harbor requires a photography permit for any professional session on the grounds, proposals included. Budget for that in advance and confirm current pricing directly with the Cultural Center, since permit fees change.

Time of day matters more here than it might elsewhere. The Tuscan Garden faces a lot of open sun, and midday light gets harsh with heavy shadows. Early morning or the last couple hours before closing give softer, more even light. Gerard's permit slot landed in the afternoon because of an event on the grounds later that day, which is worth planning around: check Snug Harbor's public events calendar before you lock in a date, since weekends in particular can bring private events or limited access.

Weekdays tend to be quieter across the property. If the Tuscan Garden's fountain area is occupied, and it's a popular enough spot that this happens, the vine arch and the mini castle nearby are good backup locations within the same gardens. The grounds cover a lot of ground and some of the pavement is uneven and historic, so comfortable shoes are worth the tradeoff over dress shoes if you can manage it.

Behind the camera

A proposal only happens once, and it happens fast. Working around midday light in a garden like this means staying ready rather than waiting for perfect conditions, because the real moment, the knee hitting the ground, the first reaction, doesn't pause for better light. That's the trade worth making every time.
