Joe and Francesca's proposal happened on a humid July evening, right as the light over the Pond turned gold. Gapstow Bridge sits at the quieter southeast corner of Central Park, close enough to the city that you can still see the skyline from the water's edge, and it's one of the more reliable spots in the park for that kind of light. After six years together, four of them spent long distance, Joe had been planning this moment for a while. He just needed the right excuse to get her there.

How They Met

Joe and Francesca met on Leap Day of 2020, through a mutual friend at the University of Wisconsin. Drinks, a game of pool: the kind of night that doesn't feel like anything until later. COVID hit soon after and they started hanging out and dating. After college, Francesca moved to New York for work, and the couple spent four years long distance before Joe made the move, too. By this July, they'd been together for six years and both of them were ready for the next chapter in their relationship.

The Proposal

The cover story was Joe's birthday. Dinner at Polo Bar, drinks first at King Cole. Francesca had painted her nails for the night, half hoping, half suspecting something was coming. When their Uber dropped them a few blocks short of the bar, Joe called it a detour. At that point, she just knew.

They walked into Central Park toward Gapstow Bridge. At a lookout in front of the bridge, Joe stopped, started talking, and Francesca was already crying before he got the ring out. He knelt down and popped the question, to which Francesca was of course ready to say yes to. A few feet away, a little girl was blowing bubbles, and some drifted straight into the frame.

It had been a packed night. The Pond draws a crowd on a summer evening, more so with tourists in town that week. I'd scouted the spot ahead of time and timed the moment around a gap in foot traffic, but a passerby still caught part of it on their phone and sent Joe and Francesca the video afterward. Rain had been threatening all day. It never came, lucky for us all.

Afterward, they went back to Polo Bar, where they were seated at Ralph Lauren's corner table and given champagne. The ring itself has its own story: Francesca had admired a vintage design for two years before Joe had a jeweler in Philadelphia recreate it for her. The thoughtfulness, effort and care that Joe put into getting Francesca the exact ring that she wanted is a testament to how willing he is to make her happy!

Planning a Proposal at Gapstow Bridge

Gapstow Bridge sits at the southeast corner of the Pond, near the Sixth Avenue and Central Park South entrance. It's an easy, no-permit spot for a small personal proposal. Photography without a tripod or professional lighting setup doesn't require a permit either, though be wary that it's a popular spot for tourists to frequent so it can get crowded.

Sunset is the best window here. The water reflects both the skyline and the bridge itself, which gives the photos depth you don't get midday. The tradeoff is crowds. This corner of the park is a few minutes from the Plaza and gets steady foot traffic, especially in summer. Arriving early to hold the spot, and having a backup angle in mind if a tour group parks itself on the bridge, makes the difference.
