Michael & Kaitlyn's Proposal at Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden
- Proposals
Michael and Kaitlyn got engaged on a late September afternoon, on the small island in the pond at Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem, a spot neither of them had ever been to before that day.
Michael and Kaitlyn met at Ithaca College and dated casually for about a month before COVID sent everyone home. What could have ended the relationship ended up building it instead. Stuck at home with nothing but free time, they started talking every night, Kaitlyn staying up well past her usual bedtime just to catch up with Michael on the phone. By May of 2020, they were driving to meet halfway between Mount Kisco and Albany, and they've been together ever since. Kaitlyn moved down to Westchester in the fall of 2024, and the two have lived together since.
Michael knew he wanted to propose somewhere in Westchester, but hadn't found the right spot until I recommended the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Gardens in North Salem to him. I had recently photographed a microwedding in the gardens here, and I knew it would be amazing for a proposal. He visited ahead of time to see it for himself and knew right away it was the perfect spot to pop the question.
Mike told Kaitlyn they were headed out for a surprise date, and she suspected something was coming. They spent time walking through the museum first, then out into the gardens, Mike leading her slowly toward the pond so as not to tip her off that something big was coming. She luckily didn't notice the bulge of the ring box in his back pocket, too! They crossed the rock bridge onto the small island in the center of the pond, and as soon as he started talking, Kaitlyn was already crying happy tears. He got down on one knee, and she said yes.
Afterward, the two of them wandered the rest of the gardens for photos, spinning in circles and running together when I asked them to, the kind of playful, loosening-up moment that tends to happen once the adrenaline starts to settle. Kaitlyn said the fact that they were truly engaged kept sinking in more as the session went on, and it was such a joyful evening!
This spot tends to draw a steady but light stream of visitors, spread out across the gardens rather than clustered in one place, which keeps a proposal here feeling private even without having the grounds to yourselves. The island and rock bridge over the pond give you a distinct, quiet setting, and the museum itself doubles as a built-in cover story if you need a reason to be there before the moment happens. Plus, you don't need a photo permit to bring a photographer with you and admission to the museum and gardens is only $12/person.
North Salem itself is part of what makes a proposal here feel special beyond just the gardens. It's horse country, with farms dotting the backroads on the drive in, and a couple of real apple orchards close by, Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard and Outhouse Orchards both worth knowing about if you're proposing in fall and want pumpkin picking or cider donuts built into the day. A handful of good restaurants in the surrounding towns make it easy to turn the proposal into a full afternoon rather than just a single stop, arrive, propose, and still have somewhere worth going afterward to actually celebrate.
Yes. Visitors tend to be spread throughout the gardens rather than concentrated in one area, so the island and pond area usually stay quiet.
Yes, it's a straightforward drive from most of Westchester and the surrounding area, with on-site parking right at the museum, so there's no long walk-in or complicated logistics to plan around before the proposal.
North Salem is horse country, with two real apple orchards nearby, Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard and Outhouse Orchards, good options if you're proposing in fall. The surrounding towns also have restaurants worth building into the day, so the proposal doesn't have to be the only stop.
If you're picturing a moment like Michael and Kaitlyn's, I'd love to help you plan it. I'm a proposal photographer working across Westchester, the Hudson Valley, and NYC, and I know this location (and many others!) well enough to help you find the right quiet corner for your own moment. Reach out and tell me about the two of you and what you are planning, and I will be in touch within 24 hours!
