Gregory and Claire's proposal happened on a calm July evening at Peekskill Landing Park, along a quieter stretch of walkway overlooking the Hudson. The river was still, the light was soft, and the whole thing came together with a level of planning that Claire never picked up on.

How They Met

Claire and Gregory met five and a half years ago at the University at Buffalo. They started dating and stayed together through the rest of college. In the years after, both moved downstate to Westchester. However, they had a time of transition where Claire was still finishing her degree in Buffalo, so they were long distance for about a year and a half. This past year, Claire was able to leave Buffalo and the couple moved in together in White Plains. This made Peekskill, a short drive from home, a natural setting for what came next.

The Proposal

Gregory's cover story was simple: a work event, with a stop planned to pick up a coworker at the train station. He suggested they get there early and take a walk while they waited. That walk led them down to the water at Peekskill Landing Park, and Claire had no reason to think it was anything other than a way to pass a few extra minutes.

I stayed a few hundred feet away from them with my long lens ready while the two of them stood at the end of the walkway, looking out at the river. They talked for a few minutes, long enough that I had time to find my angle and wait for the moment to settle. Then Gregory knelt down and asked Claire to marry him. Claire was instantly emotional and so happy! Under the nearby pergola, a teenage couple had been quietly watching the whole thing unfold, and clapped once Gregory stood back up.

Claire was surprised that the proposal happened that evening, even though she told me afterward that she'd had a feeling something might be coming soon. She just hadn't expected it that particular night, on what looked like an ordinary errand.

Claire was actually wearing the same dress her sister had worn for her own engagement, a detail neither of them had planned but both loved once they realized it. Claire called her sister right after to tell her, and the two of them ended up laughing about the coincidence together over the phone.

The new fiancees had lots of fun reflecting on everything leading up to the proposal, and had a great time taking photos together with me throughout the park. The sunset was perfect and a beautiful backdrop to their special evening.

The path from the parking lot is short and flat, which matters more than people expect when you're trying to keep someone calm and unsuspecting on the walk in, a long or awkward approach gives away more than people realize.
