Gio & Riley's Surprise Engagement Story


When you’ve been with someone since high school, your love story is layered with memories, inside jokes, and moments that only the two of you fully understand. That’s the kind of story Gio and Riley share — and as an NYC proposal photographer, these are the moments I live to capture.


Gio had been planning this day for a long time. Years earlier, Riley had casually mentioned her dream proposal: a romantic engagement followed by dinner at the iconic River Café in Brooklyn. He never forgot that detail. When it came time to propose, he designed the entire day around that dream — choosing Brooklyn Bridge Park as the perfect place to pop the question, with views of the bridge, the skyline, and the River Café just steps away.

But Gio went even further to make the surprise truly unforgettable.


He wanted Riley to be dressed up for the occasion — not just for dinner, but because he knew how important it would be for her to look and feel her best in the proposal photos. So he told her they were meeting two of their friends for a fancy double date at the River Café. To pull it off, he photoshopped the reservation to look like it was for four people and even showed her fake texts from his friend throughout the week. It was genius — and it worked perfectly.

When they arrived at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Riley was completely unsuspecting. The weather was gorgeous, the sun shining, and the East River sparkling with ferries passing by. As they paused by the water, Gio took her hands and got down on one knee.


Her reaction? Absolutely priceless.


She gasped, threw her things to the ground, and immediately dropped to the ground with him, overwhelmed with emotion. As an NYC proposal photographer, moments like this — raw, real, and joy-filled — are what I aim to preserve forever. You can feel the love in every frame.

After she said yes, we wandered through the park for a beautiful engagement session, and the excitement kept bubbling over. Riley would laugh and shout, “We’re engaged!!” like it had just hit her again. It was pure magic.


And then came the final surprise: the ring. Engraved inside were the words “You’re my sunshine”; a phrase tied to the very first ring Gio gave her in high school — a simple silver band with the words “you are my sunshine, my only sunshine,” which Riley had worn every day since. As she held it up, she laughed, “I can finally take this one off now!”


This Brooklyn Bridge Park proposal was everything: heartfelt, scenic, and full of meaning. From the thought Gio put into every detail to Riley’s emotional response, it’s the kind of proposal that reminds me why I do what I do.
