A Sunset Proposal at Rockwood Hall


When Adam started planning his proposal to Maddy, he knew he wanted it to happen somewhere meaningful to him.

Although the couple currently lives in Boston, Adam grew up in the Sleepy Hollow area and was visiting family when he decided it would be the perfect opportunity to propose. With help from his older sister, he landed on one of my favorite locations in Westchester: Rockwood Hall.


If you've never visited Rockwood Hall, it is one of the most beautiful spots along the Hudson River located in Rockefeller State Park. The expansive rolling lawn, historic stone ruins, walking trails, and incredible sunset views make it feel both grand and peaceful at the same time.


On this particular evening, the weather could not have been better. It was an early June day with warm temperatures, clear skies, and that golden evening light that photographers dream about.


Waiting at the proposal spot were a few special details coordinated by Adam's sister, including lanterns from her own wedding that added a personal touch to the setup. She was also responsible for bringing one very important guest.

Bubba Stole the Show


As Maddy approached the proposal location, she was completely surprised. Against the backdrop of the Hudson River and the setting sun, Adam got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.


The emotion on her face said everything. She was shocked, excited, and incredibly happy all at once.


Of course, after saying yes, her attention quickly shifted to the ring. And for good reason. Adam had put a lot of thought into finding the perfect one. Knowing that Maddy is a huge Taylor Swift fan, he searched for an elongated cushion-cut diamond, a style that has become especially popular among Swifties. Finding exactly what he wanted took some effort, but the result was absolutely stunning.


Adam and Maddy's shih tzu, Bubba, made a surprise appearance at the proposal and immediately became one of the stars of the evening. Dressed in an adorable bow tie, Bubba looked more than ready for the occasion. After the proposal, Adam's sister came to congratulate the new fiances and Bubba came RUNNING to his parents, who were now engaged!


Between the proposal, the sunset, the ring, and Bubba's appearance, everything came together perfectly.

Exploring One of Westchester's Most Beautiful Locations


After the proposal, we spent time exploring Rockwood Hall together for portraits.


This location offers so much variety in a relatively small area, which is one of the reasons I love photographing sessions here. We took photos along the trails, on the iconic stone wall overlooking the river, and throughout the open fields while the sunset continued to light up the landscape.


One of my favorite things about Adam and Maddy was how playful they were together. They spent much of the session running through the grass with Bubba, spinning each other around like kids, laughing constantly, and simply enjoying being newly engaged. The entire evening felt relaxed and joyful. Knowing they would soon be celebrating with family afterward made the excitement even more tangible.


Every proposal is unique, but this one had so many elements that made it memorable: a meaningful hometown location, a gorgeous sunset, family involvement, a beloved dog, and a couple who were genuinely thrilled to start this next chapter together.


Although this was my first session at Rockwood Hall, I can tell you with complete certainty that it will not be my last! I already cannot wait to shoot more proposals and portraits at this location!
