Some proposal locations in Central Park never go out of style, and the overlook in the Ramble with views of the Lake and San Remo buildings is definitely one of them. I have photographed several proposals in this exact spot over the years, and every single one still feels unique because every couple brings their own energy and story into the moment. Derek and Kim’s proposal was sweet, emotional, and honestly really fun to photograph.


The two originally met on Hinge and had been together for a little over a year when Derek proposed. One of my favorite details from their story was something Kim apparently said on their very first date. According to Derek, she casually told him she was going to marry him someday. He laughed awkwardly at the time... And now here they are.


For the proposal, Derek chose one of the classic stone walkway overlooks in the Ramble with the Lake and San Remo view behind them. It is one of the most iconic proposal locations in Central Park for good reason. The view feels peaceful and secluded while still giving you that unmistakable New York backdrop.

Kim definitely had a feeling a proposal might happen that day, but when Derek finally got down on one knee, she was still incredibly emotional and excited.


He proposed with a stunning solitaire oval diamond set on a gold band that looked absolutely timeless on her hand.

One thing I always notice during proposal sessions is how quickly emotions shift afterward. The anticipation disappears and couples suddenly settle into this really joyful, almost relieved excitement.


After taking a few moments to soak everything in, we spent time wandering through the Ramble taking engagement portraits together. The entire area was incredibly beautiful with soft light filtering through the trees and the Lake appearing through the pathways behind them.

We eventually made our way over to Bethesda Terrace for more portraits, which added a completely different feel to the gallery. I love pairing the quieter nature-focused areas of Central Park with more iconic architectural spots because it gives couples a nice variety of images while still keeping the session cohesive.


Throughout the session, Derek and Kim were constantly laughing together and settling naturally into each other. Even though they initially arrived with a little bit of nervous energy, by the end they looked completely comfortable in front of the camera. That transformation honestly happens with almost every couple.


My approach during proposal and engagement sessions is always focused on helping people feel relaxed instead of overly posed. I guide couples naturally while leaving space for real interaction and movement so the photos still feel genuine to who they are together.


Derek and Kim’s proposal was such a sweet reminder that sometimes relationships really do start with immediate certainty. Even if Derek did not quite know how to respond when Kim predicted their future together on date number one, it turns out she was right all along.
