A Spring Proposal Along the Brooklyn Waterfront

Patrick and Emily’s proposal at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade felt like the perfect combination of personal, relaxed, and very New York-esque.

The two of them first met at yoga in Fort Greene and built a life together in Brooklyn over the past several years. Emily is originally from Wisconsin, Patrick is from Hawaii, and both of them attended NYU before eventually moving in together in 2023. They also share life with their cat and recently experienced the loss of another one, which made this season of life feel especially emotional and meaningful for them both.

Patrick planned the proposal around something that would feel natural for their relationship rather than overly elaborate.

He arranged for Emily to leave work early on a Friday afternoon before meeting her near Fulton Street and heading over toward Brooklyn Heights together for what she believed was just a casual walk by the water. Instead, he had something much bigger planned.

A Beautiful Surprise at Brooklyn Heights Promenade

As soon as they arrived at the promenade, Patrick proposed overlooking the waterfront with the Manhattan skyline stretching behind them. Emily looked completely shocked in the best possible way. The excitement and happiness between them immediately filled the entire space around them, and once the initial surprise settled in, they both relaxed into the moment together so naturally.

The timing for the proposal could not have been more beautiful either. It was April in Brooklyn, which meant cherry blossoms and spring flowers were blooming throughout the neighborhood everywhere we walked. The soft spring light paired with all the flowering trees gave the entire session such a bright and romantic atmosphere.

After the proposal, we spent time taking engagement portraits along the promenade while the waterfront and skyline glowed behind them.

Wandering Through Brooklyn Heights Together

Once we finished along the water, we continued exploring the streets of Brooklyn Heights together. One of the reasons I love photographing sessions in Brooklyn Heights is because the neighborhood naturally feels cinematic without trying too hard. Between the brownstones, quiet tree-lined streets, and spring blooms, every corner works beautifully for candid portraits.

Patrick and Emily were incredibly sweet together throughout the entire session. A lot of the afternoon was simply spent walking together, laughing, holding onto each other, and soaking in the excitement of being newly engaged.

Those are always the moments I love documenting most because they reflect how the day actually felt instead of turning the experience into something overly posed.

The entire gallery ended up feeling warm, playful, and deeply connected to both their relationship and the city they built their life in together. Brooklyn Heights in the spring already feels romantic on its own, but the energy between the two of them made the entire afternoon feel especially memorable.
