Adam & Maddy's Rockwood Hall Proposal in Sleepy Hollow, NY
- Proposals
When you're planning a proposal, choosing a meaningful location can make the moment even more special. For Neil and Kelsey, there was no better place than the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
The two live in Brooklyn within walking distance of the gardens and visit frequently enough that they have an annual membership. Over the years, it became one of their favorite places to spend time together, wandering the pathways, enjoying the changing seasons, and escaping the pace of city life without ever leaving their neighborhood. After eight years together, Neil knew it was the perfect place to propose.
Their story began during their sophomore year at NYU, where they met while both playing volleyball. Spending time with them, that connection was immediately obvious. They were completely comfortable with each other, quick to laugh, and had the kind of chemistry that only comes from years of growing together.
Rather than proposing in one of the garden's most popular spots, Neil chose a quieter section that the two of them often enjoy walking through together. The location was a beautiful pathway lined with flowers that felt tucked away despite it being a busy Saturday afternoon. One thing I always appreciate when couples choose meaningful proposal locations is that the setting already feels like part of their story.
Although Kelsey had a small feeling that something might be happening that day, she was still completely surprised when Neil got down on one knee. As soon as she realized what was happening, she immediately started crying. The reaction was incredibly sweet and genuine, and it was clear just how much the moment meant to both of them.
Even though the gardens were busy with visitors enjoying the sunny afternoon, Neil timed everything perfectly and was able to propose with very few people nearby.
After the proposal, we spent time exploring the Brooklyn Botanic Garden together for engagement portraits.
One thing Neil and Kelsey told me early on was that they normally don't love having photos taken together. That concern disappeared pretty quickly.
The entire session felt effortless because they spent most of it making each other laugh. They were constantly teasing each other, sharing inside jokes, and generally being as silly and giggly as possible. Rather than forcing poses, much of the session focused on letting them interact naturally while we wandered through the gardens.
We eventually finished the session in the Rose Garden, which was absolutely beautiful despite being one of the busiest areas of the park that afternoon.
Looking back through the gallery, some of my favorite images are the ones where they're simply laughing together.
The proposal itself was beautiful, but what really stood out was how much fun they had throughout the entire experience.
By the end of the session, both of them admitted they had enjoyed taking photos far more than they expected.
For a couple who loves Brooklyn, loves the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and has spent eight years building a life together, it was the perfect place to begin their next chapter.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of my favorite proposal locations in New York City thanks to its beautiful gardens, seasonal blooms, and variety of private, meaningful locations.
Whether you're planning a surprise proposal or an engagement session, I focus on capturing genuine reactions and natural moments while helping the experience feel relaxed and stress-free. If you're looking for a Brooklyn proposal photographer or planning a proposal at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I'd love to help document your story.
