Pierce & Gabriela's Pierson Park Proposal | Tarrytown Proposal Photographer
- Proposals
There is something extra special about a New York City proposal during the holidays. It's the lights, the trees, the crisp winter air, and the feeling that the entire city is glowing! Lauryn and Kaiden’s proposal happened the week before Christmas, and it was the perfect mix of thoughtful planning, family involvement, and holiday magic.
Lauryn’s family was visiting NYC for the holidays, and Kaiden joined the trip (with a secret mission, of course). With a little help from his future sister-in-law, he reached out to plan a surprise proposal. Originally, Kaiden envisioned proposing in front of the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. While it’s absolutely stunning, I gently let him know that during peak holiday season, Rockefeller Plaza is incredibly crowded unless you’re willing to go before sunrise. I really did not want them to feel like sardines in a can during that special moment, plus I know that you can't really see the whole tree when you're very close to it anyway. Since he really wanted that classic Christmas tree backdrop, so we pivoted to another beautiful option: the tree in Madison Square Park and it ended up being the perfect choice.
Madison Square Park is one of my favorite winter proposal locations in NYC. During the holidays, the Christmas tree is gorgeous, and unlike Rockefeller Center, it’s much quieter and more intimate. Plus, you can also see the Empire State Building in the background, which is a big plus for tourists and locals alike! When the big moment came on December 22 (peak holiday tourist season in NYC), there were very few people around, which allowed Lauryn and Kaiden to truly soak it in.
Because Lauryn’s family was in town, Kaiden wanted them there, but he still wanted it to be a complete surprise to Lauryn. So we came up with a plan. I approached them as a “random passerby” and asked if they wanted a family photo in front of the tree. After snapping a few photos of everyone together, Kaiden casually peeled off behind Lauryn.
When she turned around…
He was down on one knee.
Her reaction was everything: complete shock, hands to her face, and then the most emotional, heartfelt yes. It was one of those moments where time slows down and you can actually feel how much love is in the air.
After the proposal, Lauryn and Kaiden’s family wandered through the park while we captured their engagement photos.
It was a cold December day that made our cheeks turn rosy, but the light was beautiful and the holiday atmosphere made everything feel cozy and romantic. The Christmas tree, the winter coats, the city skyline peeking through… it was such a classic New York holiday scene. These two were glowing the entire time and having so much fun together!
If you’re thinking about proposing in NYC during the holidays, here’s what I always recommend:
Lauryn and Kaiden’s proposal was the perfect example of how a little planning can create a moment that feels effortless and unforgettable. Kaiden pulled off an incredible surprise, Lauryn said the most emotional yes, and they’ll forever have this beautiful Christmas memory tied to New York City. I can’t imagine a better way to start the holiday season. ✨
