A Central Park Proposal with a Crowd

November in Central Park has a completely different kind of beauty. The leaves are almost gone, the air feels crisp, and the park takes on this quiet romantic atmosphere that honestly makes it perfect for proposals. Lathan and Jenny’s proposal near Bow Bridge was one of the sweetest and happiest proposal sessions I photographed all season.

Not long after they started dating, Lathan moved to New York City in August 2022 to begin medical school. For a while, the two of them made long distance work while Jenny continued living in California. They visited each other constantly, switching between trips to NYC and California while FaceTiming almost every day. Eventually, Jenny moved to New York City in March 2024, and the two officially moved in together a few months later.

When Lathan reached out to me about planning the proposal, he already knew he wanted it to happen somewhere around Bow Bridge in Central Park. He carefully planned out how he would get Jenny to the location without making her suspicious while also coordinating timing with me throughout the afternoon.

On the day of the proposal, Lathan arrived early carrying the most beautiful flowers and waited nervously nearby for Jenny. As Jenny approached the proposal spot near the lake with her friends, a surprisingly large crowd had already gathered nearby. People had started realizing what was happening and quietly stopped to wait for her and watch. The second Lathan got down on one knee, everyone around them completely melted.

Jenny looked absolutely shocked and emotional while saying yes, and almost immediately the crowd around them burst into applause and cheering!

A couple of Jenny’s friends were secretly there waiting nearby as well, which made the moment even more special. After the proposal, they came over to celebrate with champagne, hugs, and lots of excitement. The energy afterward was honestly contagious.

For the rest of the session, we wandered around the Bow Bridge area taking engagement portraits while the two of them laughed nonstop together. They were genuinely so cute the entire time. Some couples are naturally affectionate in front of the camera right away, and these two absolutely were. They spent most of the session giggling together, hugging constantly, and looking completely wrapped up in the excitement of the moment.

I always try to make proposal portraits feel relaxed and movement-focused rather than overly posed, so we incorporated a lot of walking, cuddling, and playful interaction throughout the session.

The November light in Central Park also gave everything such a soft romantic feel. Even with lots of people around the Bow Bridge area, the photos still felt intimate and emotional.

As an NYC proposal photographer, Bow Bridge continues to be one of my favorite proposal locations in the city because it combines iconic New York scenery with a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere.

What made this proposal especially meaningful though was hearing more about the journey that brought them here. Between long distance, medical school, cross-country flights, and eventually building a home together in NYC, you could tell how much intentionality existed in their relationship. By the end of the session, they were still completely glowing.

Lathan and Jenny’s proposal was such a beautiful reminder that the best proposal photos are not really about perfect poses or elaborate setups. They are about documenting genuine emotion and the excitement of two people stepping into a new chapter together.
