A September Proposal in Brooklyn Botanic Gardens


Some proposal stories feel especially personal from the very beginning, and Andy and Cindy’s proposal at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was exactly that kind of day.


When Andy first reached out to me about planning his proposal, he already knew the exact location where he wanted to ask Cindy to marry him. There is a quiet overlook inside the Brooklyn Botanic Garden where the two of them sat together on one of their first dates, talking for hours and completely losing track of time. He told me that memory always stayed with him, and he wanted to return to that same spot for one of the biggest moments of their lives.


A couple of weeks before the proposal, I met Andy at the gardens so we could walk through the park together and scout everything out ahead of time. We talked through timing, lighting, foot traffic, and how he wanted the proposal to feel emotionally. More than anything, he wanted the moment to feel natural and intimate while still including a few close friends who would be secretly watching nearby.

As an NYC proposal photographer, I always tell clients that the best proposals are the ones that feel true to who they are as a couple. Andy was thoughtful about every detail without making anything feel overly staged.

On the day of the proposal, the gardens were calm and beautiful. Cindy had no idea what was about to happen. When they arrived at the overlook together, Andy began giving one of the most heartfelt proposal speeches I have ever heard. It was emotional, personal, and incredibly intentional. You could tell he had spent a long time thinking about every word he wanted to say.


Then he pulled out the ring. The sapphire ring he chose for Cindy was absolutely stunning. The deep blue stone felt so timeless and elegant, especially surrounded by all of the greenery in the garden. The second she realized what was happening, she completely lit up.


Hidden nearby, a couple of their closest friends watched the proposal unfold before coming over to celebrate with them afterward. I love when couples include friends or family in proposal plans because it adds another layer of emotion to the experience without taking away from the intimacy of the moment.

After spending a few minutes celebrating together and taking photos with their friends, the three of us wandered through the rest of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for engagement portraits.

The energy during their portraits was so effortless and fun. I had them running through pathways, dancing together, cuddling on benches, and simply enjoying the excitement of being newly engaged. One of my favorite things about proposal sessions is watching couples slowly relax once the nerves disappear. By the time we got deeper into the gardens, Andy and Cindy were completely wrapped up in each other.


The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is honestly such a great location for proposal photography in NYC because it offers such a beautiful variety of scenery while still feeling peaceful and romantic. Between the tree-lined paths, open garden views, and quiet corners, it creates the perfect setting for couples who want a proposal that feels both elegant and personal.


Andy and Cindy’s proposal was such a beautiful reminder that the most meaningful locations are often the ones already tied to your relationship history. Returning to the place where they spent hours talking during one of their first dates made the entire proposal feel even more emotional.
