Pierce & Gabriela's Pierson Park Proposal | Tarrytown Proposal Photographer
- Proposals
Ben and Luisa met in Montreal, back when they were both students, through their church community. It wasn't the kind of meeting either of them planned on turning into anything, just two people showing up to the same gatherings. Pretty soon, they fell for each other and started dating. After graduation, life pulled them in different directions the way it does. Ben moved to New York for grad school, and from there settled into life in Westchester. Luisa stayed behind in Canada, building her own routine, while the two of them kept the relationship going across the border.
It mattered to both of them, in a way they'd talked about more than once, to be engaged before they actually moved in together. Not a rule so much as a feeling, that some things deserved to be settled before the practical parts of a shared life took over. So when Luisa finally packed up her life in Canada and flew down to join Ben in Westchester for good, there wasn't much waiting left to do. He'd been ready for a while. The timing had just been waiting on her.
Ben told Luisa they had dinner plans nearby, nothing out of the ordinary, and suggested they take a walk along the waterfront first, since they had some time to kill before the reservation. It was one of those early summer evenings that gets everyone outside at once, warm without being heavy, the kind of light that makes the Hudson look lit from underneath. Because of that, the path was busier than usual, families out for a stroll, a couple of joggers, and, as it happened, another photographer working the same stretch of waterfront, shooting landscapes on his own.
I used him as cover. We struck up a casual conversation and kept talking as Ben and Luisa came into view, which let me stay close without tipping her off.
The couple found a bench and sat for a minute, and when Ben started nudging Luisa to stand back up, her first instinct wasn't suspicion, it was worry that she was about to wander into some stranger's landscape shot! She had no idea the lady with the camera (me) a few feet away was actually there for her. When she finally understood what was happening, the worry disappeared into pure joy, the kind that's a little disbelieving at first.
A few days off a plane in a new country and already engaged says something about how sure two people can be, especially after years spent proving it long distance. Not every proposal needs a long runway. Sometimes all it needs is both people finally standing in the same city.
This stretch of Sleepy Hollow's waterfront, right along the Hudson, draws a steady stream of walkers and joggers most evenings, so it's worth planning around that if privacy matters to you. The grassy area closer to the water tends to be a better bet than the benches near the main path, both for space and for a cleaner view without as many people drifting through the background.
Evenings in late spring and early summer bring out the most foot traffic, so if you'd rather have the place closer to yourselves, an earlier time of day is worth considering. For the fuller rundown on parking, timing, and getting the best light along this part of the river, including how another couple planned their proposal at nearly this same spot, take a look at Brian and Kim's proposal by Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse.
