Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal During a Trip to NYC

Cole and Thomas live in Utah and had been together since December 2021. From early on in their relationship, they talked openly about getting married one day. So when Cole had a work trip to New York City in June, it felt like the perfect chance to turn a casual getaway into a milestone moment.


They’d be in the New York City at the end of June —just ahead of NYC Pride weekend. Cole knew he wanted the proposal to feel both relaxed and meaningful, something that reflected their personalities but still felt magical. He partnered with Perfect Picnic NYC, who created a cozy setup tucked into the Cherry Hill area of Central Park. With skyline views, shaded trees, and a quiet ambiance, Cherry Hill is a perfect hidden spot for a romantic, low-key proposals.

The Gramophone Ring Box: A Personal, Vintage Touch


But Cole didn’t just plan the where—he added a deeply personal touch to the how. He proposed with a custom ring box shaped like a miniature gramophone, a nod to their shared love of music and vintage design. It was such a thoughtful, whimsical detail that instantly made the moment more them.

The Moment Itself: A Quiet Yes in the Heart of Central Park


When Cole and Thomas arrived at the shaded Cherry Hill picnic setup that Thursday morning, the moment unfolded just as planned—intimate, emotional, and filled with joy. Cole led Thomas toward the blanket, surrounded by snacks, flowers, and sunshine. That’s when Thomas realized: this wasn’t just a stroll through the park.

Cole knelt down and pulled out the vintage gramophone ring box. The look on Thomas’s face said everything.


What followed was the kind of quiet, powerful moment that doesn’t need an audience. Just two people, fully present with each other, in the middle of a city that holds space for love in all its forms.

They took time afterward to soak it all in and explore the area, capturing portraits in the surrounding greenery and by nearby Bow Bridge—letting the beauty of Central Park add its own soft romance to the story.

The Proposal Before Pride Weekend


What made this proposal even more special was the timing. With NYC Pride weekend just around the corner, there was something incredibly symbolic about getting engaged in a city known for its love, celebration, and LGBTQ+ history.


This wasn’t just a proposal—it was a joyful, visible celebration of queer love in one of the most iconic places in the world.
