Kara & Mimi's In-Home Family Session on the Upper West Side | NYC Family Photographer
- Family Sessions
One of the most meaningful parts of my job is getting to continue documenting families as they grow over the years.
I first met Corina and Greg when Corina was pregnant with their first son, who is now two years old. Since then, their family has grown even more with the arrival of their second baby, and it felt incredibly special getting to photograph this next chapter for them inside their Upper West Side apartment.
For this session, they specifically wanted to stay at home because Corina has put so much care and personality into decorating their space. I always love when families choose locations that genuinely reflect their life because it makes the photos feel even more personal years later.
Their apartment had such a warm, cozy atmosphere and beautiful natural light throughout the space, which created the perfect environment for a relaxed family session. And of course, their sweet mini bernedoodle, Bella, also had to be included.
One thing I always try to prioritize during family sessions is creating an experience that feels fun instead of overly posed, especially when toddlers are involved. While we definitely captured some classic smiling-at-the-camera portraits for the family, a huge portion of the session focused on interaction and movement.
We had everyone jumping on the bed together, cuddling on the couch, and piling on top of each other in what we jokingly called a “family pile” to get everyone laughing. Those moments ended up creating some of my favorite images from the entire session because they felt so natural to who this family is together right now.
Their older son brought so much energy and personality into the session, and giving him room to play instead of expecting him to sit perfectly still helped the entire experience stay relaxed. That approach is especially important with young children because the best family photos usually come from genuine connection rather than perfect behavior.
There was so much laughter throughout the session, and Bella happily wandered in and out of the action the entire time too. Including pets in family sessions always adds another layer of personality and warmth because they are such an important part of everyday family life.
Along with all the playful family moments, I also spent time focusing on their new baby and documenting some quieter portraits of him on his own. There is something so emotional about photographing a newborn in the home they are just beginning life in. The tiny details, sleepy stretches, and calm moments with parents feel especially meaningful during those first few weeks and months because everything changes so quickly afterward.
One of the things I love most about in-home family photography is how timeless the photos become later on. Years from now, these images will not only remind Corina and Greg of this season with two little boys, but also of the apartment they brought their second baby home to, the way their toddler laughed while jumping on the bed, and the little everyday moments that made up their life together.
The Upper West Side already has such a classic and comforting New York feel to begin with, and documenting families inside their homes there always feels especially intimate and personal. Sessions like this are such a reminder that meaningful family photos do not require elaborate locations or perfect conditions. Sometimes the most important thing is simply documenting your family exactly as you are right now.
If you are looking for an NYC family photographer and want photos that feel natural, joyful, and deeply connected to your real life together, in-home family sessions can be such a beautiful way to preserve this season.
