Kara & Mimi's In-Home Family Session on the Upper West Side | NYC Family Photographer
- Family Sessions
There is something special about photographing families in the spaces where their everyday lives actually happen.
When Kara and Mimi reached out about family photos, their son Elliot was nine months old and they wanted images that documented this season exactly as it was. Since the session took place during the winter and outdoor temperatures were less than ideal, staying home on the Upper West Side was the perfect choice.
In-home family sessions often allow everyone to feel more comfortable, especially babies. Parents do not have to worry about weather, nap schedules are easier to work around, and little ones get to stay in a familiar environment.
For Kara and Mimi, it created the perfect setting to capture life with Elliot at this stage.
One thing that made this session especially personal was incorporating music into the photos. Kara is a musician, so we started the session with her singing and playing guitar while Mimi and Elliot joined in nearby.
I always love when families include meaningful parts of their daily lives in a session because it immediately makes the photos feel more personal and authentic. Some of my favorite images from this portion of the shoot were the quieter interactions between the three of them while Elliot watched and listened.
At nine months old, babies are full of curiosity, and Elliot was no exception. He was constantly observing everything happening around him and moving from one new discovery to the next.
After the music portion of the session, we moved into the living room where Elliot had plenty of space to crawl, play, and explore. Family sessions with babies are always best when we follow their lead rather than expecting them to fit into a rigid plan.
The more freedom children have to move and interact naturally, the more genuine the resulting photos become.
Throughout the session, Elliot crawled around investigating toys, climbed into his parents' laps, and gave us plenty of sweet smiles along the way.
The entire session was relatively short, but it perfectly captured what Kara and Mimi were hoping to preserve: this specific season of life with their growing son. Those everyday moments often become the most meaningful memories years later. The gallery ended up feeling warm, relaxed, and full of connection, which is exactly what I hope every in-home family session captures.
If you are looking for a NYC family photographer and want photos that document your family in a natural and meaningful way, an in-home session can be such a wonderful option.
In-home family sessions are perfect for documenting the season you're currently in, especially with babies and young children. Your home already contains so many meaningful details and memories, making it the perfect backdrop for natural, relaxed family photos.
As a NYC family photographer, I focus on capturing genuine interactions and connection rather than stiff poses. If you're interested in an in-home family session in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester, or the surrounding areas, I'd love to document your family's story.
