Documenting Another Chapter of Their Story

One of the greatest gifts of being a photographer is getting to continue documenting people through multiple seasons of their lives.

Claire is one of my best friends, so photographing this maternity session felt especially meaningful because I have also photographed so many important moments leading up to this one. From their proposal to their engagement party to Claire’s bridal shower, I have had the privilege of documenting so much of their relationship already. Now, they are preparing to become parents.

For their maternity session, Claire and Jeff wanted to stay at home in Rockland County and focus on capturing this season of life in a space that already feels deeply personal to them. Their home immediately felt warm, peaceful, and full of personality, especially the nursery they had carefully designed together.

A Woodland-Themed Nursery Full of Personality

The nursery was honestly such a perfect reflection of who Claire and Jeff are as people. The entire room was decorated with woodland creatures and nature-inspired details, which felt incredibly fitting because they both love the outdoors and animals so much. Every corner of the space had thoughtful little touches that made it feel cozy and personal without being overly styled.

In-home maternity sessions always feel especially intimate because couples are surrounded by the spaces they are actively preparing for their new baby. Years from now, these photos will not only remind Claire and Jeff of the excitement leading up to becoming parents, but also of the nursery they created with so much care before their baby arrived.

We spent time photographing throughout the nursery as well as in other areas of their home where the natural light was especially beautiful. Claire looked absolutely radiant throughout the entire session.

Including Their Cat Oscar in the Session

One thing I loved about this session was how relaxed and natural it felt from beginning to end. We captured a mix of portraits together as a couple, quieter moments focused on Claire and her pregnancy, and candid interaction between the two of them throughout the session. Their excitement about becoming parents was obvious in every part of the shoot.

Of course, their cat Oscar also had to make an appearance, too! Including pets in maternity and family sessions always makes the photos feel even more personal because they are already such an important part of home life before the baby arrives. Oscar wandered into several photos throughout the session and added such a sweet layer to the gallery.

One of my goals during in-home maternity sessions is helping people feel comfortable enough to simply exist together naturally rather than focusing on stiff posing the entire time. The best images usually come from real interaction, movement, and connection. Claire and Jeff made that incredibly easy because they are so comfortable together already. The entire session felt calm, joyful, and full of anticipation for this next season of life.

As a maternity photographer, these are always the sessions that stay with me most. There is something so emotional about documenting the quiet moments before everything changes forever in the best possible way. Getting to photograph this chapter for Claire and Jeff after documenting so many milestones already felt incredibly special, and I cannot wait to continue watching their family grow.
