A Sunny December Proposal in Brooklyn Heights

Winter proposals in New York always have such a cinematic feeling to them, especially on those bright December afternoons when the sunlight reflects across the skyline and everything feels crisp and clear. Jackson planned his proposal to Rebecca at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade on one of those cold but beautiful winter days.

The two of them have been together for nearly three years after originally meeting online while Rebecca was finishing law school. Their relationship included a few stretches of long distance along the way, most recently while Rebecca spent a year working in Miami, but now they are finally settled together in their Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan.

For the proposal, Jackson told Rebecca they were heading to meet friends for dinner afterward, which helped keep her completely unsuspecting as they walked along the promenade together. She truly had no idea what was coming.

An Emotional Surprise Proposal

As soon as Jackson got down on one knee overlooking the Manhattan skyline, Rebecca immediately burst into tears.

Her reaction was one of those moments that completely takes over emotionally in the best possible way. She was so overwhelmed and surprised that she actually dropped down onto her knees while crying as Jackson gave her the ring.

The entire moment felt incredibly raw and genuine.

One thing I love most about proposal photography is witnessing reactions that are completely unfiltered, and Rebecca’s excitement and emotion made the whole scene feel even more special. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade created such a perfect backdrop for the proposal too.

Even in the middle of winter, the combination of skyline views, waterfront scenery, and classic brownstone-lined streets nearby makes the area feel timeless and romantic. The cold weather also meant the promenade was quieter than usual, which gave the proposal a much more intimate atmosphere.

Playful Portraits on Brooklyn Heights Promenade

After the proposal, we spent time together for engagement portraits along the promenade with skyline views behind them. The winter sunlight paired beautifully with the neighborhood architecture, and the entire gallery ended up feeling bright, emotional, and very distinctly New York. One thing that stood out immediately about Jackson and Rebecca was how playful and comfortable they were together. Once the initial emotions settled a little, the two of them spent most of the session laughing nonstop and joking with each other. Those playful interactions ended up creating some of my favorite photos from the entire afternoon because they reflected their relationship so naturally.

Sessions like this are always such a reminder that proposals do not need elaborate setups to feel deeply meaningful. Sometimes all you really need is a meaningful location, genuine emotion, and two people completely excited to start the next chapter together. Jackson and Rebecca’s proposal felt intimate, joyful, and full of the kind of excitement that lingers long after the moment itself is over.
