Fall Foliage During a Family Session

There is something so special about Central Park in October. The light gets softer, the air still feels warm, and the entire park starts glowing with early fall color. On a sunny October afternoon, I met up with Elana, her husband, and their two kids for a playful family session in Central Park. Their daughter is five years old, their son is two, and they were both completely full of energy in the best way.

This session felt especially meaningful to me because Elana is actually my friend’s sister, so I have known of her since we were growing up. Seeing her now with her own beautiful family and two little kids running around Central Park honestly felt surreal in the sweetest way.

One of my favorite things about family photography is documenting families exactly as they are in this season of life. Especially with younger children, I never want sessions to feel stiff or overly posed. Instead, I focus on creating space for genuine connection and movement.

Throughout the session, I encouraged the kids to play, explore, and interact naturally with their parents. We spent a lot of time simply walking together through the park, letting the kids run ahead, hold hands, skip together, and laugh naturally.

Their daughter was especially sweet with her little brother. Watching the two of them run side by side through the park made for some of my favorite moments from the entire session.

Rather than forcing constant eye contact with the camera, I guided the family through activities that felt fun and relaxed. We played games, chased each other down pathways, and let the kids take little breaks whenever they needed them. That approach almost always leads to photos that feel more emotional and authentic because everyone has space to actually enjoy the experience.

One thing I always tell parents before family sessions is that children do not need to behave perfectly for beautiful photos to happen. In fact, some of the best moments come from the in-between interactions. A child reaching for their parent’s hand, siblings giggling together, or parents laughing through the chaos often become the most meaningful images later on.

The weather that day could not have been more perfect. The sunlight filtered beautifully through the trees, giving everything that warm golden glow that makes fall sessions in Central Park so timeless.

As an NYC family photographer, Central Park is one of my favorite locations because every corner feels a little different. Some areas feel open and grand while others feel quiet and intimate. It gives families plenty of room to move naturally without feeling crowded or rushed.

By the end of the session, the kids were completely comfortable and having fun, which is always my goal. Family photos should feel like memories, not obligations. Looking through these images now, what stands out most is how connected this family is. You can feel the warmth between them in every frame.

Documenting families as they grow and change over the years is one of the biggest honors of my job. Sessions like this one are such a beautiful reminder that the small everyday interactions often become the moments families treasure most later on.
