A Special Proposal 20 Years Later


Some proposal stories are emotional because of the surprise. Others are emotional because of everything the couple has already lived through together. Israel and Cynthia’s re-proposal in Central Park was a beautiful moment I do not think I will ever forget. The two of them have been married for 20 years and were visiting New York City from Florida with their children when Israel decided he wanted to propose to Cynthia all over again.


When they first got married years ago, Israel did not have a ring to give Cynthia. Over time, their relationship grew, their family grew, and eventually he decided he wanted to create the proposal experience he had always dreamed of giving her. He chose a quiet dock overlooking Bow Bridge in Central Park for the moment, which could not have been a more beautiful setting. Their three children stood nearby watching everything unfold. Their oldest daughter knew the proposal was happening ahead of time, but their two younger sons had no idea. Watching their reactions during the proposal was honestly one of the sweetest parts of the entire experience.

As Israel began speaking to Cynthia, the entire atmosphere shifted. His speech was long, emotional, and incredibly thoughtful. He reflected on their marriage, the life they built together, and the way their love has evolved over the past two decades.


At one point during the speech, he explained the meaning behind the ring he chose for her. Part of the ring included stones designed to resemble a butterfly because, in his words, their love had transformed over time the same way a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.


There honestly was not a dry eye nearby. As a proposal photographer, I witness a lot of emotional moments, but this one felt especially powerful because their children were able to witness it too. Watching Israel publicly honor his wife after 20 years of marriage felt like such an incredible example of love, commitment, and devotion for their kids to grow up seeing.


So often, proposal photography focuses on the very beginning of a relationship, but this moment was a reminder that love stories continue evolving long after a wedding day.


After Cynthia said yes again, the entire family gathered together celebrating on the dock while the younger boys excitedly processed what had just happened. The joy afterward felt so genuine and emotional. We spent some time taking family photos and portraits around the Bow Bridge area afterward while everyone soaked in the moment together. Central Park always feels magical for proposals, but there was something especially meaningful about this one happening in the middle of a family vacation.


One of the things I love most about being an NYC proposal photographer is getting to document such a wide range of love stories. Some couples are just beginning their next chapter together while others are celebrating decades of growth, resilience, and partnership.


Israel and Cynthia’s re-proposal was such a beautiful reminder that romance does not disappear with time. If anything, it becomes even deeper and more meaningful. Their story was proof that love can continue choosing each other over and over again, even 20 years later.
